What is a Nose Job (Rhinoplasty)?

Rhinoplasty, nose reshaping or simply nose job is a plastic surgery procedure. It deals with reshaping, reconstructing or correcting the nose.

It helps both in case you have suffered a trauma and require reconstructive surgery or you just are not satisfied with what your nose looks like, want to improve the appearance of your nose and thus need cosmetic surgery.

Nose job helps combat certain breath problems due to obstructed airway or get rid of birth defects.

The aim of a plastic surgeon is to create a functional, aesthetic, and proportionate nose that will enhance overall facial harmony.

Am I a candidate for a Nose Job (Rhinoplasty)?

You are if:

  • You are not satisfied with the appearance of your nose
  • You consider your nose too big, too small, or disproportional for your face
  • Your nose is asymmetrical
  • There are humps or depressions on your nose bridge
  • Your nostrils are too wide or upturned
  • Your nasal tip is too hooked, upturned, drooping or enlarged

Before deciding on rhinoplasty surgery in Thailand make sure that:

  • You are healthy
  • You do not smoke
  • Your nose growth is complete
  • You are realistic about the results of nose job

Always remember that you should only do rhinoplasty for yourself and not for anybody else who does not like the appearance of your nose.

How is Nose Job (Rhinoplasty) Performed?

Rhinoplasty procedure normally consists of the following steps: Anaesthesia – Surgery – Closing the incision.

Before surgery, you will be administered medications for your comfort during the procedure. Your doctor will decide what suits you best, intravenous sedation or general anaesthesia.

To get access to the structure of your nose, incisions are made in order to lift the skin that covers the nasal bones.

Incisions can be either hidden inside the nose in case of a closed procedure or made across the columella if it is an open procedure.

After the access to the nasal bones is gained, the doctor starts reshaping the nose structure. During this step bone or cartilage can be removed if it is a nose reduction surgery, or cartilage from septum or the ear are added if reconstruction is necessary.

If you experience breath difficulties, during this step the deviated septum can be corrected, too.

Closing the incision
When the surgeon finishes manipulations with the underlying structure of the nose, nasal skin and tissue are placed back delicately and the incisions are closed.

If the size of your nostrils requires correction, at this point several additional incisions are made.

What are the risks of Nose Job (Rhinoplasty) surgery?

While rhinoplasty is one of the safest and most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures, it still entails certain risk. They are minimal but you need to be aware of them.

Some major risks of nose job include:

  • Adverse reaction to anaesthesia
  • Post-operative bleeding. It is rare and usually resolves without treatment.
  • Bad wound healing or infection. To avoid infection, antibiotics are prescribed as a part of post-operative therapy.
  • Poor sensibility of nasal skin. Skin sensibility restores gradually but this process may require up to 6 months.
  • Perforation of nasal septum. Though rare, it requires additional surgical treatment.
  • Difficulty in breathing due to scarring. In certain cases, surgical removal of the obstruction is necessary.
  • Nasal appearance that does not meet your expectations.

What results should I expect after Nose Job (Rhinoplasty)

The results of rhinoplasty cannot be evaluated immediately.

It takes about a week for the swelling to subside. After this period you will be able to see your new nose for the first time.

But it may take up to 12 months for the tissues of your new nose to settle and refine to the permanent contour.

Rhinoplasty has relatively permanent, long-lasting results. Yet with ageing of your body you may notice some gradual minor changes.

What should I expect during my Nose Job (Rhinoplasty) recovery?

Rhinoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure. It means that you will be able to leave the hospital or clinic immediately after surgery.

Medications will be prescribed to facilitate wound healing and alleviate pain. They may include antibiotics, analgesics and steroids.

It is recommended to stay at home for about a week during your initial recovery stage. By the end of the week, the swelling normally subsides and sutures, both internal and external, are removed.

Panda eye, i.e. under eye bruising may persist for up to two weeks. Before the end of the second week, splint, packing or bandages placed to support your new nose structure from inside and outside will be removed.

After two weeks your rhinoplasty recovery should be complete and you will be able to return to your usual daily activities.

Note that some patients may experience morning swelling that comes and goes during the first year after their nose job.
